Rustenburg Shenanigans

So after two nights in Johannesburg, we took a drive up to Rustenburg to meet up with our friend Adele and to prepare for the USA-England match. Rustenburg is much smaller than Joburg although the downtown area was going nuts as we drove into town. At noon on tuesday, every radio station was calling for people across the country to leave work and flood into the streets to make as much noise as possible for the coming tournament. I've never seen so many people blowing their vuvuzelas (read: obnoxious soccer horns) for hours in the streets. Good thing Seth brought lots of ear plugs, those horns are rediculous and you can hear people blowing them as early as 6 in the morning.

Yesterday, Adele took us out to Pilanesburg National Park which is about 45 min from Rustenburg. We spent 4-5 hours driving through the park and saw some amazing animals and countryside. Then as we drove into a herd of elephants, Austin saw that we had a flat tire. The look on Adele's face told us this was a bad situation. Once we drove another 100 ft or so to get out of the pack, we strategized on how we were going to change the tire as we had another 10k or so before the nearest road. I told everyone to stand watch around the perimeter of the car and that I would change the tire. We were all pretty juiced as we jumped out of the car and got going as about 10 gigantic elephants were only 50 ft away. The tire was changed quickly and no one was taken out by elephants or leopards so it was successful.

  1. Trampled by elephants on your third day. That would have made some news...
